I triumphed over a fear that once held me back, feeling a surge of relief and accomplishment.
My wife and I recently took a trip to Chicago. I am afraid of heights. We walked from our hotel to Navy Pier, where there was a giant ferris wheel. Have I mentioned that I am scared? I mean, deathly scared of heights? My wife Ann wanted to go on it, and I had to put on my big boy pants to accommodate her.
I used breathing techniques that I have learned using the Calm app. My wife and I held each other’s hand.
Only once did I feel panicked, and that was when the Ferris wheel stopped, and the wind shook our gondola. Yes, there is a video of my stress.
I am grateful that Ann encouraged me to face my fear. And you know what? The views of the Chicago lakefront from the top were breathtaking, making the whole experience worth it.
The moral of the story is clear. When you need to do something out of your comfort zone, having a supportive partner by your side can provide the reassurance and comfort you need. And remember to breathe.
